K2 Program Philosophy
The K2 program for Team Panorama is a learning to race development phase, however the emphasis continues to lie with a skiing skills and physical development focus. Ski drills and refinement of technique is blended into the teaching of racing environments in order that by the end of the K2 period, the skiers will enter the FIS circuit with a solid technical and tactical understanding of ski racing. Again, with the Team Panorama program the goal is improvement and building the correct foundation for further improvement.
The Alberta series will be used as the racing environment however there may be a local BC and/or Saskatchewan race attended. The program is not based solely on the athletes reaching the Canadian Nationals or the Whistler Cup, but rather is based on becoming a well rounded athlete with excellent skiing skills first.
The program will be based on around 100 on snow days with approximately 16 race starts. There is a short summer camp in Mt Hood and a year round physical program emphasis. High quality local on snow training days is the focus of the program using our long winter months to the fullest. There will be several week day training sessions at Panorama depending on the time of the season and race schedule. COP will be used 2 nights a week during the winter.
At the K2 level there is an introduction to the speed events with Super G at Panorama however the main focus of the program is definitely based fully on the technical events. We have a long-term, patient approach in which we wish to allow the child to develop a proper physical foundation and it is for this reason the skiers train with physical conditioning experts. The K2 program uses a 3 day a week cycle and individual work outside these days.
The K2 program is still very much viewed as a learning to train and learning to race development phase. The children in this phase are going through the largest physical changes and quite often technical elements suffer because of this. This is why race results cannot be the main focus. Teaching how to become a clever racer with excellent skills is our goal.
